Community groups from across Hackney gathered at Gillett Square’s stage to take part in a march to inaugurate the start of Peace Week. The 200 participants consisted of the International Ethiopian Women’s Organisation, Tropical Isles carnival group, Icon Theatre and many others representing the diversity of Hackney’s residents.
The London School of Samba batteria welcomed the marchers and played a half-hour set in the square before a speech by Hackney’s Mayor Jules Pipe about the importance of promoting non-violence and encouraging community cohesion in the borough. With the help of special events police and a large stewarding crew the parade departed from the square and headed up Kingsland High Street led by the samba players to Clissold Park where the full event took place.

The event was funded by Team Hackney and managed by Hackney Council for Voluntary Services in collaboration with Gillett Squared.
